A few words

Hamburg is in Northern Germany and is the second-largest city, while it is consistant of 16 German länder. It is an economical and cultural centre of Northern Germany, has 2.302 bridges and its port is one of the largest in Europe. However, the port of the city is not the sea, but crosses the river Elbe.

History

The name of the city derives from the first permanent settlement that was surrounded by a castle, the Burg, which was built by the emperor Charlemagne, in 808 A.D., among the marsh between the river Alster and the river Elbe. The prefix Ham or Hamma is undefined, as is the location of the castle. The history of Hamburg begins from the Roman era, while the greater part of the city was destroyed by a great fire in 1842. It was rebuilt, it got destroyed again during World War II only to be built again.

Sights

The church Sankt Michaelis: The church is the trademark of the city, has a height of 132 meters and you can climb at 100 metres height with elevator, to have a fantastic view of the city. It was built in 1760 and is visible from every point of the city.

The town Hall of Hamburg: it Is a striking building in the centre of the city, which was built in the late 19th century and has 647 rooms. Near the town hall is also located the commercial centre of Hamburg, where you will find countless department stores. The Warehouse district Is the largest warehouse complex in the world and is located in the port of Hamburg. it has been included in the UNESCO world heritage list. The warehouses are multi-storey buildings, where some of them are turned into museums, while a large part of the buildings retain their original use.

The Fish market (Fischmarkt): it Is a traditional fish market next to the harbour and is one of the most popular points of interest. The fish market operates Sundays from 05:30, while there is live music.

Region of Hamburg Reeperbahn: The notorious avenue of Hamburg, Reeperbahn, is located in the region of S. Pauli and is proposed for a visit in the evening. There you will find many nightclubs, bars, restaurants, theatres, cabarets, as well as the neighborhood of the Red Lantern.

What to eat

In Hamburg one can find a wide variety of restaurants, cafés and bars. The cosmopolitanism of the city is reflected in the whole culinary scene, while you can taste the traditional cuisine of the German North with dishes like Labskaus (pickled herring with mashed potatoes and beetroot and on the top is a fried egg), the Nussencken (dough, chocolate, and nuts) and the Aalsuppe (vegetable soup). For fresh fish and shellfish, prefer the port area.

Nightlife

Hamburg is a bustling port city with intense night life. This city offers many fun alternatives that serve all tastes and ages, as it has from quiet bars, to clubs with loud music, which remain open until the early hours. The Red Light District, is the most popular area of Hamburg where all the tourists visit.
