A few words

Nice is located in the south of France and, in particular, on the Côte d'azur, or French Riviera. This is one of the best tourist port and the largest city of the Côte d'azur. The Carnival of Nice, which takes place since 1873, as well as the natural beauty of the area with the mediterranean climate and the old town, with strong elements of the English aristocracy of the 18th century, are some of the reasons to visit the "Nice la belle" (beautiful Nice).

History

Nice, founded by Greeks of Marseille, was named in honor of the goddess of Victory, a name which it retained until today. Historically, and until 1860, Nice had active part in the history of Italy, in the alliances and wars of the middle Ages. In 1860 with the Treaty of Turin, Nice was given as a region to France where it belongs until today. From the 18th century onwards, the city begins to have a particular tourist development, as the aristocrats of Britain were mesmerized by the mediterranean climate and natural beauty. The "Promenade des Anglais", the central coastal road of the city, took its name in honor of the British who proposed and funded a large part of the construction of the coastal walkway. The city remains a tourist attraction to this day with more than 4 million tourists a year.

Sights

Nice, built between the sea and the mountain, with items from the Roman era, the middle Ages and the Renaissance, can be called city-attraction.

The pedestrian Promenade des Anglais runs along the beach and is the ride that guests of the city have to undergo to admire the endless sea and the buildings of the beach. One of these buildings, is the hotel Negresco which was built in 1912, that was declared a historic national building in France.

In the area of Cimiez, a little north of and relatively remote from the sea, you will find the roman baths and the archaeological museum of the city. At the top of the hill Gros, to the north of the area Cimiez, there is the Astronomical Observatory in Nice. Even though you need a vehicle to go there, the view alongside the building itself, which construction started in 1879, is idyllic.

The Botanical Garden of Nice, daily open and free of charge for guests, constitutes a pole of attraction for nature lovers.

To the east of the city you will find the harbour area with an abundance of an antique, as well as the area of Mont Boron, with the villas of the rich.

What to eat

In Nice, you will enjoy French cuisine. Don't forget however to try the local recipes, such as La Daube Nicoise, the ravioli nicois and the pissaladiere as main dishes, as well as the pan bagnat, and socca as a snack for your walks in the city. Finally, as a side dish, you can try the traditional salad of Nice, the salade nicoise with tomato, eggs, olives and anchovies or tuna.

Nightlife

In Nice you can find cafes with a medieval decoration, English pubs, wide array of restaurants, bars with jazz and blues decor and music, terraces for a relaxing drink, beach-bars to clubs with live music and party until the early hours. Even though the city of Nice is not known for a vibrant nightlife, Saint-Tropez, famous for its parties, is located just 1.30 hour away, you can find also in Nice what suits you for a night out.
