A few words

Zurich is the largest city of Switzerland and capital of the Canton of Zurich. With a population of about 370.000, the city stretchs along the river Limmat and is located under the Alps. It is the financial and business centre of Switzerland, as well as the whole Europe, since it is the city with the largest banks. Still, it is considered the city with the highest living standards in the world and the official language is German.

History

The name of the city derives probably from the celtic word Turus, because the location of the present city was a point of tax collection. During the Middle Ages, the city developed greatly and became one of the 5 members of the swiss confederation. The strong position in the economic and cultural life of  Zurich was already established from the mid-19th century, when it became the most important financial center of Switzerland, remaining until today the informal capital of the country.

Sights

Zurich is a city that has some of the most spectacular sights and, of course, important places of art and culture. The tour starts from the old town, with cobbled streets and nostalgic aura to transport you back in time. For those who still prefer the modern version of the city, the Bahnhofstrasse is the street of shops, as it is called. The largest firms have their own branches here, while on the opposite side of the river Limmat, you will find the National Museum of Switzerland, the Landesmuseum, which is one of the most important museums of European History. The tour does not stop here, since the museum Rietberg and the art gallery Kunsthaus are 2 of the most popular cultural institutions in the country.

What to eat

Zurich is a typical sample of swiss cuisine, which is a mixture of German, French and Italian cuisine with some special features and the use of the exceptional local products. The freshwater fish from the river and the lake are cooked with fresh ingredients, while it is worth to taste the famous cheeses and meats. Pork meat, sausages and soups are especially popular with the locals, while you will find many variations of the famous pretzel. Finally, the national food here is considered to be the Rosti, i.e. potatoes fried in butter, which is including in every table.

Nightlife

Zurich has a very vibrant nightlife with many clubs in relation to the population. In the district of Langstrasse, has developed a great set of clubs and bars, which attracts a large part of locals and tourists. Here is where the biggest festival of dance music is held every August. Also, in the western part of the city in an industrial area, you'll find the most modern side of entertainment, with clubs and many outdoor bars, all of which serve grandly decorated outdoor spaces or terraces.
