A few words

Brussels is the capital of Belgium but also the richest and most populous area. It is built in the center of the state, in the valley of the Brabant. The city of Brussels is known as the capital of E.U.. Also, while it is officially bilingual, between the Dutch and the French, 90% of the population speaks French. It receives thousands of visitors as it has plenty of particular attractions, parks and famous local cuisine.

History

The history of the city of Brussels seems to be starting with the Stone age, while the first settlement that indicates the beginning of the present town began with the construction of a chapel on an island in the river Senne in 580 A.D.. The official founding of the city was approximately on 979 A.D. with its permanent fortification. A milestone point in the history of not only of the city but the whole country is the belgian revolution in 1830. This was followed by the independence of Belgium with capital Brussels and afterward thedestrucion of the walls of the city. Tragic moment in the modern history of Brussels is the bombings in March 2016.

Sights

One of the most well-known landmarks of Brussels is the square of Grand-Place. This is the central square of the old town. Built in the 15th century, it impresses with its architecture and is one of the best examples of baroque art in the world. Since 1998, the Grand-Place belongs to the UNESCO World Heritage sites.

The Atomium is one of the most representative monuments of the city. Built for the 1958 World fair of Brussels represents the cell of an iron crystal, magnified by 165 billion times. Τοδαυ is one of the most tourist spots as it has already received more than 2 million visitors that can enjoy the panoramic view of the city. In the wider area of the park Hazel, where is the Atomium is Mini-Europe. This is a re-enactment of famous european buildings in miniature models.

The national symbol of Brussels is the 61-inch bronze statue of Manneken Pis. The statue depicting a boy urinating in a fountain and has been stolen many times, while there are a number of folk myths around the reasons for its creation.

The glass commercial galleries Royal Gallery of Saint Hubert are an architectural masterpiece and today they host outdoor cafes and shops receive thousands of visitors.

The Cathedral in Brussels is dedicated to Saint Michael and is one of the most impressive gothic architecture. It took more than 300 years for the completion of the reconstruction, and today is one of the most remarkable points of interest of the capital of Belgium.

What to eat

Brussels is famous for the local cuisine and definitely the belgian chocolate is one of the "souvenirs" which each visitor will take back with him. Quoting the famous sweet dishes of the city, the waffles are a point of reference. It is usual for locals to enjoy the waffles without the overlay as it is very fluffy, and delicious by themselves. In terms of main dishes, famous is the belgian stew Carbonnades Flamande, which includes sweet-and-sour beef and grilled onions with beer. Also, the national dish is French fries making the Belgians proud. French fries are served everywhere , in restaurants and at street stalls. Finally, the steamed mussels is a dish enjoyed by the locals and visitors have to taste.

Nightlife

In the city of Brussels, the fun to a large extent is related to the pubs where you can taste some of the local belgian beers. The country produces more than 2000 different beers, and it is certain that it attracts the interest of visitors. This of course does not mean that there is no other kind of entertainment. Night clubs, bar with Latin american music, and discos are open until the early hours of the morning for the entertainment of the public.

Public transportation is done via bus, tram, train and metro. Also, there is the Waterbus. This is a bus service in the water, which connects the city of Vilvoorde and Brussels, a journey of 10 km to channel the Senne.
